Parents Complain About Twilight Books in School Libraries in Canada for “Sexual Content and Violence”

The Twilight books are on the list of most challenged books by parents and educators according to CBC News. Apparently there’s toomany complaints about the books’ content and they have been deemed inappropriate for school libraries. Don’t worry, they’re in great company with novels like Harry Potter, Catcher in the Rye, The Color Purple and To Kill a Mockingbird.

The annual list of challenged books released Wednesday by the American Library Association ranges from picture book And Tango Makes Three to perennial classic The Catcher in the Rye.

Meyer’s multimillion-selling Twilight series was ranked No. 5 on the list, criticized for sexual content and violence.

The challenges may also reflect discomfort about supernatural stories, said Barbara Jones, director of the ALA’s office for intellectual freedom.

“Vampire novels have been a target for years and the Twilight books are so immensely popular that a lot of the concerns people have had about vampires are focused on her books,” Jones said.

If kids want to read theTwilight books, they’ll still be able to do it outside of schools. But removing books like Catcher in the Rye or The Color Purple? School is probably the only place where kids can learn about these books, since they’re not publicized everywhere like Twilight. Bad move, ALA.

I think that Twilight should be listed because of its abusive and controlling main character under whom a brainless and apparently balance-less teenage girl gets suckered into marriage and children before the age of 20.
