More From Stephenie Meyer’s Junket With Fansites, Talks of Edward’s Decision To Wait

Friday, July 30th, 2010

Here’s more from the mini-junket Stephenie Meyer had with a few fansites last month. Thanks to TwiFans, we have a portion of the interview that focuses on the theme of waiting ’til marriage, Edward’s virtue and the decisions behind the proposal scene in Eclipse.

Q: One of the most “nice moments” is when they’re in Edward’s room in bed, and he proposes, okay? There are lots of people that have asked questions, I’ve probably had 10 or 20 just within that one scene. But the one I want the answer to the most is: Edward at one point, he kind-of caves. Just a smidge. When he says “no, no, stop, we’re not doing this until we are married” — is it more out of a moral issue, or is it more out of “I want to make sure you keep up your end of the deal”?
SM:
They’re equal parts. There are a couple of things. One is, Edward was born in 1901. And in his mind — he understands the world more clearly than we do. He hears everybody’s thoughts. But to him, this is kind of a…for him it’s a very disrespectful… And he can’t get away from the taboos of his youth. It would be wrong to take advantage of her, in his mind. And obviously, she has a completely different viewpoint. Her viewpoint of it is very modern. She knows that she is with him forever, and she doesn’t see his point. But he just comes from a different place. And I really like, every place I could put in, that would really date him. Because I like when he is…..109.

Q: Chivalrous!
SM:
When he’s different, because he has a lot of different experiences. Part of it is, he is stalling for time. He wants to string the…..because there is that part of him that knows it would be better if she went with Jacob. For her, in his mind. He never foresees her being a happy vampire. In his mind, it’s all the Rosalie reaction. He just thinks she will be miserable and there will be so much pain, for her. He wants her to be happy, so he thinks “the longer we string this along, maybe she is going to change her mind, maybe she’ll say yeah, I wanna stay human, I’ll do this.” And then there is just absolutely the physical fear. Because he is really worried about that part of it. The pain of becoming a vampire is not a joke! All this timing, the way I envision it, it’s a big deal. Some say “just bite her, just bite her.” Wouldn’t that just give you so much pause? It’s like you want your husband or your loved one — you want him to be like you, but you’re going to have to torture him for three days. It’s a long time for anyone and bad enough that it went on for three days. It’s a huge deal. That’s a big thing for him. Even knowing that she’ll get over it and it will pass…those three days are a gigantic hurdle.

Q: Do you think that the way that she fears…the fact that before she’s going to turn, she thinks “well what if after I turn, I’m not going to love him anymore or I’m not going to feel the same way?” Does he ever fear that at any time?
SM:
Oh, he fears that. He does. She doesn’t much, because she feels that, ya know, “I’m gonna love you forever,” and he knows that things change. And after having just gone through this horrible thing, there could be part of her that turns around and says “you did this to me. I just went through all this horrible stuff because of you. Now my family is going to die, and I’m going to have to watch that.” He just only sees the negative. A lot of him becoming an optimist is, her reaction to being a vampire and seeing…she was right.

This is a really interesting portion of the junket, so make sure you read the full interview here at TwiFans.com.

Midnight Sun Is One Of Time’s Top 10 Leaks

Friday, July 30th, 2010

Time Magazine has made a list of the biggest leaks in recent history. Now, you might think this list is all about books, or leaked movies, like say Wolverine which leaked completely online before its release, but no, this list includes cases like the Pentagon’s papers, Watergate and the recent Afganistan war logs.

The leak of Twilight as told from Edward’s point of view upset Stephenie Meyer so much that two years later she still refuses to publish the book, or even give a hint at a possible release date in the future.

In 2008, she tried something different (sort of) by retelling the events of the first books, only from Edward’s point of view. Sooner than you can say “glittering vampire,” 12 unfinished chapters from the new manuscript, Midnight Sun, appeared on the Internet. “I think it is important for everybody to understand that what happened was a huge violation of my rights as an author, not to mention me as a human being,” Meyer said in a message to fans. Rather than punish her loyal following, Meyer posted her entire unfinished Midnight Sun draft on her website. The only catch is that it’s unprintable — better bring an e-reader.

Now if it only was the complete manuscript…

Melissa Rosenberg Says She’s Trying To ‘Find Room’ For All Characters in Breaking Dawn

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

Melissa Rosenger is busy adapting Breaking Dawn for the screen. Keep in mind that we’re talking about a long novel that will be split into two different movies. The job must not be easy. Here she shares with MTV her thoughts and the challenges of writing the screenplay.

“It’s extremely challenging to introduce those new characters because you already have quite a slew of characters to service,” Rosenberg admitted of Meyer’s final book. “The Cullen family is large, the wolf family is large, you have three leads … finding room for all of them is a challenge. For me, it is about pulling forward the ones that are essential and really making sure they have a presence.”

On using her Facebook page as a tool for finding out what fans want to see:

“I ask people to really weigh in with what are their favorite scenes in the books, what’s important to them,” Rosenberg said. “And there generally seems to be a consensus about one scene or another. It’s really helpful for me and I’ll interact with them sometimes.”

She also assures fans that we will see the birth scene, and Jacob’s perspective of the story:

“At one point, [the fans] were upset because they had gotten the impression that I was choosing not to put the birthing scene in the script, and I was able to go online and say, ‘I don’t know where that idea came from, but of course the birthing scene is going to be in.’ ” Another Net-generated rumor, according to Rosenberg, is that she won’t include the Book of Jacob in the final film. “I don’t know where that idea came from, but that is not true,” she confirmed. “We are going to see Jacob’s perspective equally, so don’t worry.”

Kristen Talks to Austrian Magazine “News”

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

Two wonderful interviews with Kristen in a row! Make sure you read our previous post too. This one comes from Austria, and was translated by a tumblr user, so follow her and thank her because translating long interviews always takes time.

News: You are role model for a whole generation. How do you deal with all the hysteria concerning your person?
Stewart:
Girls my age identify with Bella, that’s obvious. But that has nothing to do with me. These girls love Bella so much they project that onto me. I’m a rather shy person. All this hype and euphoria is not about me, but about the person I represent in the movie. I would like to clear that up: Hey, I’m not some kind of demi-godess. I adore “Twilight” as much as you do. I was just lucky enough to get the role. I’m expected o be better than the fans but I’m not.

News: They also love you as a person, your understatement and that you’re down to earth .
Stewart:
People also hate me for that.

News: In “American Girl” you play a marine in training. The director predicts an Academy Award for you. Will you learn how to speak arabic? Are you interested in politics?
Stewart:
Yeah, I’m very interested in that. But the focus in this story lies on a family. A girl and what she thinks about her country. It has nothing to do with what her homecountry does. It’s a tragic story. A girl without any options joins the marines and eventually lands in Afghanistan. And it’s also about how she deals with this after her return. If they are actually gonna go through with the project then I’d love to learn arabic.

News: You are also a part of Kerouacs classic “On the Road”?
Stewart.
Yes, for sure because that was my first favourite book. A great inspiration. For 25 years now the projects awais realization and I’m a part of it!! I’m really lucky!

News: Is traveling an inspiration for you?
Stewart:
That’s what’s really cool about these exceptional circumstances. We travel a lot. On the one hand I love traveling, on the other hand I nearly have to force myself to do it. Maybe that’s chracteristical for Americans since we aren’t exactly known as globetrotters. I’m a control freak and I always have to know what’s happening. I think backpacking would be therapeutic for me.

News: Pattinson was quoted that be would love to see a hardcore version of “twilight” for adult eyes only.
Stewart:
He was just kidding. I, for one, wouldn’t do a porn version of “Twilight”.

News: In “Eclipse” there’s this one spectacular kissing scene with Taylor as Jacob. Did it take you long to shoot that?
Stewart:
It took the whole day. I just thought: Oh god this better be good.

News: Are women like Jodie Forst role models for you?
Stewart:
Jodie Foster’s great. I can’t even express how important she was for me. I think it’s impressive in general if women rock a movie. Because most people just want to see stories about men.

Kristen Talks to The Telegraph

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

There’s a new interview with Kristen on The Telegraph. Here are some highlights:

On being part of Twilight:

“It’s just surreal to be a crucial part of a machine like this. I’m sort of the vessel. These girls are obsessed with Edward through me. If I wasn’t right, I’d be persecuted and put on a cross.”

On playing Joan Jett:

“It was tough because I only had a really tiny window of free time, but I wanted to make the movie. And I didn’t want to get any older because I’m already older than Joan was when she was in the Runaways. I just crammed it in, and hoped that it would work. And it did. It’s nice to switch to movies like this between Twilights, but I’m excited to go and do the next couple of years of Bella’s life.”

On being interviewed:

“It’s impossible to always get across what I’m trying to say, but, if I just stay honest, then I’m not going to look back on any of these interviews and wonder what I was trying to do or be.”

“I’m asked all the time in interviews about who I am, and I know a few people my age who have a strong sense of self, but I couldn’t say I know myself and sum it up and give it to you in a little package. I don’t know myself at all yet.”

On coping with fame and double standards:

“I’m 19, and, being a public figure, I’m supposed to present myself in a certain way, but it’s hard and you’re never going to be able to tell people who you are through the media,” she says hesitantly. “It’s sort of impossible. It’s much easier for a guy to say what he wants and not to be cute and funny all the time, but, if you’re a strong sort of woman, you’re just, for lack of a better word, a bitch.

“But I’ve been really lucky for a long time, and I’ve worked with amazing people, and I just hope that that continues. I don’t know what I’d do if I didn’t have this.”

Is she dating Rob?

“I wouldn’t tell you anything about anybody I cared about because it becomes entertainment for other people, and it sort of just cheapens everything in your life,” she says firmly but pleasantly. “I would never tell you if I was dating anybody.”

Glamour UK Interviews Robert Pattinson

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

Glamour has a new interview with Rob that focuses a lot on Remember Me, for some reason. Here’s a portion of the interview:

Q: What’s your best disguise in order to be able to walk down Oxford Street?
A: Biting your nails works quite well! Actually, I was in HMV on Oxford Street on Christmas Eve buying Christmas presents, and not a single person noticed. And here were posters [Twilight and New Moon] everywhere! It’s been years since I’ve done anything like that, and I think people just aren’t looking in the same way in London.

Q: How do you deal with fame?
A: I just try to keep working. Even ten years ago, Leonardo DiCaprio always talked about being able to take a break away from everything, but I don’t think you can do that anymore. I think you need to capitalize and steer your career at the same time, because I think that, especially with a thing like Twilight, where it is literally such a huge universe…

Q: Is it a burden to you, but it opens doors?
A: It opens doors and it closes others, like anything does. You can say, ‘Oh if I was still unknown, then no one would judge me’, but at the same time, nobody would give a shit either (laughter). It’s a weird little balance. And most of the time, you are just completely guessing what you should do, so I guess I’m just doing scripts that I think are good.

Q: You said that you never asked a girl on a date like Tyler does. Is that more difficult now you’re famous?
A: Yeah, I would imagine. I’m much more self conscious now because you can’t afford to like fail. You’re kind of afraid of succeeding too so you just kind of, you know, anyway you look at it…

Q: In what ways has this success changed things for you?
A: It changed more in America. I always thought it was going to be like this. I came out last Christmas and it was kind of… it was all pretty low key again and I always thought it would’ve changed by now in London but it hasn’t really. People just don’t look for the same stuff, but in America, I guess it is different.
