According to Geeko System, the Twilight series will be studied at a Cambridge literature class:

Professor Maria Nikolajeva, who will be the centre’s first director, said it was important to get an understanding of what was influencing young people.

She said: “It’s easy to say that these things are just kids’ fashions or that they’re trash, but I don’t believe that’s good enough.

“If what we regard as trash is popular with young people, we need to know why and whether, as researchers and teachers, we can offer them something that addresses the same needs but also deals with these themes in a critical and ethical way.”

She added many trainee teachers did not understand the significance of the latest children’s books or films when they went into the classroom.

“Studying this can help us deal with questions which are important not only for the children themselves, but for adults as well,” she added.

The Wall Street Journal has an article about the books that were never meant to be founf by anyone to publish. Books that many agencies rejected but that managed to become world wide success, like Anna Fank, Harry Potter and Twilight.

As writers try to find an agent—a feat harder than ever to accomplish in the wake of agency consolidations and layoffs—the slush pile has been transferred from the floor of the editor’s office to the attaché cases of representatives who can broker introductions to publishing, TV and film executives. The result is a shift in taste-making power onto such agents, managers and attorneys. Theirs are now often the first eyes to make a call on what material will land on bookshelves, television sets and movie screen.

Still, discoveries do happen at agencies, including the biggest publishing franchise since “Harry Potter”—even though it basically took a mistake to come together. In 2003, an unknown writer named Stephenie Meyer sent a letter to the Writers House agency asking if someone might be interested in reading a 130,000-word manuscript about teenage vampires. The letter should have been thrown out: an assistant whose job, in part, was to weed through the more than 100 such letters each month, didn’t realize that agents mostly expected young adult fiction to weigh in at 40,000 to 60,000 words. She contacted Ms. Meyer and ultimately asked that she send her manuscript.

The manuscript was passed on to an agent, Jodi Reamer. She liked what she read, a novel called “Twilight.” She signed Ms. Meyer, and sold the book to Little, Brown. The most recent sequel in the series, “Breaking Dawn,” sold 1.3 million copies the day it went on sale in August 2008. The latest film grossed more than $288 million in the U.S.

According to USA Today, The Twilight Saga took up the four spots in the best selling lists of 2009.

For the second year in a row, Meyer swept the top four spots. No other author — not even J. K. Rowling— has done that in the list’s 16-year history.

Meyer’s coattails pulled 16 other vampire titles onto the list of the year’s 100 most popular books.

“Meyer had an unbelievable impact,” says Michael Norris, books analyst for Simba Information, a market-research firm. He wonders what publishers will do when what he calls ” ‘the vampire industrial average’ falls. Every cycle has an end.”

But for now, Meyer — who has also benefited from Twilight movie adaptations, with more to come — has turned “the YA (young adult) category into the PG-13 of books,” he says. “She’s not just read by tweens and teens, but by a lot of 30-year-old women.”

USA Today made the list of the Top Ten Books of the 2000’s. and guess which books came in at number 1?

Human readers made it a big decade for novels about wizards, vampires and a Harvard symbologist. Two series for kids with “crossover” appeal to grown-ups —J.K. Rowling ’s Harry Potter and Stephenie Meyer ’s Twilight— swept nine of the top 10 spots on USA TODAY’s best-selling books of the decade. Dan Brown ’s The Da Vinci Code is No. 2.

Rowling was a best seller before 2000, when third book Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire sold a record 3 million copies its first weekend.

By 2007’s release of the finale, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows , speculation about Harry’s death (unfounded) rose to levels not seen since Charles Dickens ‘ 19th-century serials. A record 8.3 million copies sold in a day.

In 2007, Meyer, a Mormon stay-at-home mom, began an unprecedented dominance of the best-seller list with her Twilight series about a chaste teen romance starring a vampire. Last year, she sold 22 million books.

Brown hit it big in 2003 with Da Vinci , a thriller mixing fact and fiction. It made best sellers out of Brown’s three earlier novels. His latest, The Lost Symbol , has sold 4 million copies since September.

Rowling, Meyer and Brown had help from Hollywood, but their books were blockbusters in their own right: “They opened as big or bigger than the most anticipated movies, with pre-orders and opening-night parties, which spilled over to other books,” says Michael Cader, founder of Publishers Lunch , a digital newsletter. Each sold “quantities of hardcovers once unimaginable.”

Stephenie Meyer’s official site has been updated with a very important message regarding hoax ads and ‘Midnight Sun’.

September 9, 2009

Hi. I hope everyone is having a great week.

It has come to my attention through several concerned emails that many popular websites like MySpace and Facebook are displaying ads offering a chance to win Midnight Sun. This is a hoax. I would advise against giving out any personal information or even clicking on the links.

That is my ‘tip of the day’ from your friendly neighborhood webmaster. On a more exciting note, we only have to wait 71 more days until New Moon the movie hits theaters! In case you don’t want to have to count the days on your calendar (like I just did) every time you think about Edward and Jacob, I’ve added a countdown widget to the New Moon Movie page (right side).

Thanks to TMZ for letting us know about a new case against Stephenie Meyer in which she’s accused of ripping off some unknown vampire novel for the fourth installment of the series ‘Breaking Dawn’ by an equally unknown writer. According to TMZ:

Turns out Stephenie Meyer, the woman behind the Twilight series, isn’t the only
person to write about sexy vampires — ’cause she’s being accused of ripping off the
storyline for her fourth ultra-successful book by a less famous, less rich author.

A woman named Jordan Scott fired off a cease and desist letter to the publisher of
“Breaking Dawn” — the fourth book in the series — claiming the Twilight tale
contains a “striking and substantial similarity” to Scott’s book, “The Nocturne.”

In her extremely detailed letter , Scott
claims her book was published in 2006 — two years before “Breaking Dawn” — and
it’s no coincidence that many of the scenes are almost identical. Such as…

– Both books contain a post-wedding sex scene
– Both books contain a scene about a woman who’s sick because she’s carrying a
child with “evil powers”
– Both books contain a scene with the death of the main character’s wife

And according to Scott, the dialogue in all of these scenes — and more — is
extremely similar.

But Meyer’s rep is calling BS — telling TMZ, “The claim that ‘Breaking Dawn’ by
Stephenie Meyer somehow infringes on an alleged book by someone named Jordan Scott
is completely without merit. Neither Stephenie Meyer nor her representatives had any
knowledge of this writer or her supposed book prior to this claim.”

You know you’ve made it when some loser tries to accuse you of stealing their unknown work. It happened to J.K. Rowling and Stephen King!

USA Today has a new article on Stephenie’s books continuing to take over the best sellers list, breaking previous records. The article also mentions Stephenie working on a new unknown book.

Stephenie Meyer’s four-book Twilight series has sunk its fangs into USA TODAY’s Best-Selling Books list — with no signs of letting go. Meyer’s domination of the list for the past 12 months has smashed records that until now had belonged to J.K. Rowling.

Breaking Dawn, the fourth book in the teen-vampire romance series, entered the list at No. 1 on Aug. 2, 2008. Its sales and those of Twilight, New Moon and Eclipse, the first three books, have remained staggering.

This week, Meyer’s novels are Nos. 4, 5, 6 and 7 on USA TODAY’s list.

Rowling, overall, has sold more books than Meyer — her seven-book series about boy wizard Harry Potter has 143 million copies in print in the USA, while Meyer has sold 40 million copies of her four books. But Rowling can’t match Meyer’s control of the list.

Breaking Dawn and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the two authors’ fourth installments, entered the list at No. 1, but Meyer’s series has had more staying power.

The Twilight books have stayed in the list’s top 10 for 52 consecutive weeks. They held the first four spots a total of 13 weeks in the past year.

Rowling’s first four Potter books were top 10 for 13 consecutive weeks, 24 weeks total, for the first year after Goblet’s publication and held the first four spots for two weeks.

Breaking Dawn broke the first-day sales record for publisher Hachette at 1.3 million copies.

Based on aggressive marketing of Meyer’s series, this November’s release of the film version of New Moon and the upcoming holiday gift-buying season, Twilight books could dominate the list well into 2010.

“The books continue to find new audiences,” says Carol Fitzgerald of BookReporter.com, “so sales can still roll on bigger and bigger. The Twilight graphic novel that was just announced is going to bring a whole new audience to the books, and interest in the movies will keep people reading the books, as well.”

The franchise is expanding further with Twilight Journals ($24.99), Oct. 13; New Moon Collector’s Edition ($30) Oct. 13; and various New Moon movie tie-in editions through the fall.

When Meyer might publish a new novel isn’t known, says Megan Tingley of Hachette’s Little, Brown Books for Young Readers. She’s “enjoying the writing process without a deadline or targeted publication date.”

This unknown book could be a sequel for The Host, Twilight’s Midnight Sun or something entirely new. Can’t wait to find out!

The Twilight books continue to sell strong in the United States. According to USA Today all four novels take the first four spots on the best seller lists.

Stephenie Meyer’s vampires have eclipsed all comers on USA TODAY’s Best-Selling Books list, while James Patterson’s Swimsuit has its day in the sun.

Bright ‘Twilight’: Vampires won’t let go. Just as they did in the first quarter, Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight novels continued to dominate USA TODAY’s Best-Selling Books list in the second quarter — selling in the same order as they did in the first three months of the year.

TOP 150: See what’s moving on our Best-Selling Books list

Top 20 sellers for the second quarter
1. New Moon by Stephenie Meyer
2. Twilight by Stephenie Meyer
3. Eclipse by Stephenie Meyer
4. Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer
