Chaske Spencer Speaks Out Against Inappropriate Code Name In Senate Hearing

Thursday, May 5th, 2011

The Twilight cast continues to try and make a difference by doing something valuable with their time and fame. Just this morning we told you about Charlie’s success when he raised $20,000 for charity by running a Vancouver marathon and with fans donations. Today we get news that Chaske Spencer addressed The United States Senate Committee at a hearing titled OVERSIGHT HEARING on “Stolen Identities: The Impact of Racist Stereotypes on Indigenous People” where Native American stereotypes and their impact where discussed. Chaske also spoke out against the use of the code name “Geronimo” for the operation to capture Osama Bin Laden. Native American people are outraged that a prominent figure in their culture is being associated with a terrorist by using his name.

Why does this matter? The Wall Street Journal explains:

While the implications of Geronimo’s association with bin Laden may seem trivial to the average media consumer, it is in fact adding to the collective view of Native Americans worldwide. As any political campaign director will tell you, small messages, said repeatedly and amplified over time, can add up to big changes in public opinion.

To many Native Americans, Geronimo and his fellow historic warriors and chiefs epitomize the fight for survival, the continuance of a people in the face of extinction. As such, his image has become one of symbolic importance to Indian people, a representation of the resistance to assimilation and a source of hope and pride.

So you can realize why using his name as a codename for a terrorist is very messed up.

Here’s what happened at the hearing:

Spencer, who is Native American, said he was the target of racism as a child and also had a hard time finding parts that weren’t just “feathers and leathers” roles. He also condemned the use of the name Geronimo, saying that “we need to be more conscious of the associations we make.”

Spencer added that he’s turned down roles that portrayed Native Americans in a negative light and works with his production company to foster more acceptance of native actors.

Chaske Spencer On Rob, Taylor and Kristen: “I Think Very Highly of Them”

Thursday, December 23rd, 2010

Chaske Spencer was interviewed for Here are some highlights.

He has not seen the Breaking Dawn script thanks to leaks in the past:
“What they do is they’ll wait because scripts have been leaked. Not ‘Breaking Dawn’ but in the past. Then you get it and it’s like security guards and helicopters. You know, handcuff it to your wrist,” he jokes. We think.

He admires Rob and Kristen’s humbleness after fame and success:
“The experience I’ve had with the cast is everyone’s down to earth. That’s what I like. I’ve been on some films where people aren’t very down to earth… I think very highly of [Kristen] and Taylor and Rob. They’re handling it very well.”

Chaske Spencer Opens Up About Addictions on People Magazine

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

Chaske Spencer is featured in this week’s People magazine, where he opens up about his battle with heroine, cocaine and alcohol.

“I tasted my first drink at 15. It took about three cans of beer to get drunk, and that was it. I was sold. I thought, ‘This is the best thing ever.’ My Parents were starting to separate at the time, so I was very angry.

Then he moved to New York at 21 where he discovered cocaine:

“Next thing I know, my heart’s pounding, and I’m up all night. I think I’m gonna die, but I still did it again and again,” he recalled to People, explaining that he was then introduced to heroin through a girlfriend. “I started smoking it, then snorting it. Three months in, I was doing it every day. I’d never memorize my lines; I couldn’t function to audition. My work ethic went out the door.”

On going to rehab to special facility for Native Americans, after getting arrested:

“It was appealing to me because I came from the same experiences and I could relate to a lot [of the other people seeking treatment].They had us make a list of how much you’d spent on drugs. I’d blow $2 million.”

On staying clean and sharing his experience with his fellow wolfpack members:

“I got pretty tight with the wolf guys. I took each of them aside and told them I’m an addict and an alcoholic and that’s why I don’t drink.”

The Wolfpack Tells Parade They’re More Interesting Than The Vampires

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

Parade spoke with Chaske Spencer, Alex Meraz and Julia Jones. They talked about playing werewolves and how they’re much more fun than the vampires.

Advice to guys suffering for love.
Julia Jones: “I guess if I had a friend like Jacob who was risking his life for a girl who was hooked on someone else, I’d probably advise him to back off. I think you can be in love with more than one person at a time, but I think only one of them can matter. You should love in the way that love can come to mean something. I think you can only have that kind of meaning with one person and that’s where Bella is going. She’s Edward’s girl.”

Holding her own as a lady werewolf.
Julia: “I was a tomboy growing up, so the action stuff felt really familiar. I have a younger brother who’s about the same age as Chaske and Alex, so there was something that resonated about keeping up with them. I really loved the way my Leah wolf character looked. I was like, ‘Oh my gosh. She’s so cute, even though she’s fierce.’ She’s like smaller and little bit more fragile, but she could do some damage.”

Werewolves are more fun.
Chaske Spencer: “We’re a little more interesting than the vampires. They have to have that serious demeanor and we can be a little looser on the set. There were moments when we definitely brought out the goofy side of Kristen Stewart every now and then.”

For instance…
Alex Meraz: “In New Moon we had to run around in shorts, but because it was freezing we’d bundle up in these robes between takes. We were always joking around and pretending like we really had nothing on underneath. So I’d jump in front of Kristen and fling open my robe like I was flashing her and she was like, ‘Oh God, no.'”

Chaske Spencer competing with Taylor Lautner in the muscle department

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

The LA Times has some quotes by Chaske who says he’s ready to pack some muscle for Breaking Dawn.

I caught up with Spencer making the rounds at “Access Hollywood’s” Stuff You Must gift lounge in celebration of the Golden Globes. He’s looking plenty worked out, but still took some tips from renowned celebrity trainer Harley Pasternak.

“He wants to put more muscle mass on,” Pasternak said of his chat with Spencer at New Balance’s Fierce Trax booth.

“Looking big and muscular on screen isn’t about being big, it’s about symmetry, definition and proportion.”

Pasternak, who trained Robert Pattinson on the first film and the recent juggernaut “New Moon,” advised Spencer to avoid typical “beach muscles” like his biceps and chest. Instead, he told the 34-year-old to focus on the upper back to create a burly neckline and narrow “shoulder-to-waist ratio.”

We’re sure his efforts will be handsomely displayed when “Breaking Dawn” begins shooting this fall. Meanwhile, the young man faces rampant promotion this June for “Eclipse” and is already dreading inquires about his maybe-dating costars Pattinson and Kristen Stewart…

… the actor told me what everyone seems to be saying: We know nada!

“Rob’s a great guy; we hung out a few times on the set of ‘New Moon,’ but he’s not really in it. I’ve got a lot of scenes with Kristen, who is a strong and intelligent actress,” Spencer said.
