The Wrap has a great article explaining why The Twilight Saga may be the most succesful Hollywood franchise ever. Why? Because thy cost very little to make comparing with the money they’re returning to the studio.
The first movie in the franchise — 2009’s “Twilight — cost $37 million and grossed $392.5 worldwide, roughly 10 times its production costs. Its sequel, “New Moon,” was an even bigger success, banking $709.7 million worldwide, while costing $50 million to produce. That represents a 14-fold return on Summit’s investment.
The third installment, “Eclipse,” hits theaters Wednesday, and though the budget grew to $68 million, the film is projected to earn $175 million from Wednesday to Sunday, according to Jeff Hartke an analyst at the Hollywood Stock Exchange.
“It represents a fundamental paradigm shift — one that producers all over Hollywood are scrambling to understand and leverage,” said Jeff Gomez, CEO of Starlight Entertainment, who has consulted on franchises such as “Pirates of the Caribbean.” “They’re going to make their budget back in 24 hours.”
The article also explains that while there’s hugely succesful franchises out there, like Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Lord of The Rings, Twilight is different because these movies needed to invest a lot more money in order to succeed, with each installment costing at least 100 million dollars to make.
The Wrap also points out that Twilight saved Hot Topic and saved the soundtrack industry “almost single-handedly”, with 2.6 million sold albums of the first soundtrack, and 1.2 million of the second.
Finally, the article shows how Twilight was the top-selling DVD in 2009, with 10.2 million copies sold, and New Moon selling 7.2 million DVDs since it was released this spring.
