Fans can pre-order The Twilight Saga: New Moon Ultimate Fan Edition on DVD or Blu-ray, as well as the national two-disc Special Edition DVD or Special Edition Blu-ray, today at Walmart.com. New interviews with stars Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner, as well as with series-creator Stephenie Meyer, are integrated with revealing on-the-set footage of some of the key scenes and sets from the upcoming movie. While people freak out over the new Eclipse pictures, we have some New Moon images we hadn’t seen before, and they’re all lovely! They’re all scans of the New Moon trading cards (which if you haven’t bought yet, you should, because most of those pictures were not distributed online). They feature Edward, Jasper, Emmett, Bella, Alice and more in great close ups we hadn’t seen.

New Moon Visual Effects Lecture at Museum of Science in Boston

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

rob

From the Museum of Boston website:

Depicting the snarl of a werewolf, the sparkling skin of a vampire, or a handsome apparition were all in a day’s work for the visual effects supervisors who worked on The Twilight Saga: New Moon. These masters of technology were charged with bringing the latest movie installment of Stephenie Meyer’s bestselling novel to the big screen.

Matt Jacobs and his team at Tippett Studio created New Moon’s realistic-looking wolves with computer-generated imagery (CGI), a process that included getting up close and personal with fanged timberwolves at a California preserve in order to study their looks, movements, and behavior. The task of creating most of the other visual effects in the film, including the diamond-like shimmering of vampire skin coming into contact with sunlight, fell to Eric Pascarelli and his team at Prime Focus VFX. The source of their inspiration? Greek Thassos marble.

With behind-the-scenes stories and film clips demonstrating the process, these masters of technology, both from award-winning visual effects studios in California, illustrate how creativity and science combine to convey emotion, create drama, and bring New Moon to life.

Seating is limited. Seating passes are available to the general public in the Museum lobby beginning at 5:45 p.m. on the evening of the program; first come, first served. Museum members may reserve a limited number of seating passes in advance by calling between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday the week of the program only: 617-589-3169.

The lecture is free! If you are in the area and plan to attend, let us know ;) .

UK’s New Moon DVD Memory Box

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

ukbox

Another limited edition New Moon box that you can consider when you buy your DVD. This one is exclusively for the UK:

This limited edition presentation box is beautifully finished in luxurious black PU leather with gold foil text and scrolling and a red velveteen inner with mirror. It has plenty of space to store all your treasured Twilight Saga possessions and also doubles up as a great vanity case. You can take it with you or keep it in pride of place at home.

Each exclusively numbered case contains your very own copy of the New Moon double disc packed full of extras. With only 5,000 in existence (exclusive to UK) it’s a must have for any Twilight fan.

It’s important to note that it only includes one disc and it costs £64.99, so that probably means no extras like behind the scenes videos, deleted scenes, music videos and other material. In my opinion, you should find an edition that includes a second disc with lots of extras. Those are always fun!

More on the Japanese New Moon DVD box

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

new_moon_twilight_dvd_box-620x465

Crunch Gear has some information on that awesome Japanese special edition box of New Moon we showed you last week. Apparently, the box includes a movie on microSD.

The so-called New Moon / Twilight Saga Premium Box – “Always” Edition will be limited to just 2,000 units and includes:

* New Moon movie DVD (130 min.)

* Special features DVD (170 min.)

* New Moon photo cards

* A photo stand

* Mini stickers/ film stripes

* A microSD card containing Twilight

The DVDs will be bilingual (English and Japanese) and region 2-coded, meaning you’ll need a region-free player to view them. Needless to say the real collector’s item here is the microSD card, which lets you watch the complete first movie (Twilight) on your cell phone (the Japanese do that sometimes).

But beware, as that movie will probably be dubbed in Japanese (unclear at this point). And you’ll probably need a special, 1Seg TV-enabled phone to use the card.

If all of these factors and the high price ($90) don’t scare you, I suggest contacting import/export specialist CD Japan if you want to pre-order the box (they’re listing it already). It will go on sale in Japan on March 26.

Fan Gets a Phonecall from Chris Weitz

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

chris-weitz-new-moon_l

You might remember that the official Twilight twitter threw a contest and one lucky fan had the chance to interview Chris Weitz about New Moon. The fan posted her interview on her LJ account.

1.) How nerve-racking was it to know you had to relocate several location for New Moon?

A.) It was really nerve-racking because I thought people would notice and be upset, it was a puzzle to get it just right. The outside of the school is all CGI, we built the stairway for the school and took stills. In the Cullen’s house I also tried to show different rooms in the house to add to the feeling of the house. When Taylor was traveling during Twilight a fan gave him a hand-carved Native American ornament. We used that ornament in Jacob’s room in New Moon.

2.) I know Edward’s car is now a dark silver, but was there any reason for the change?

A.) Availability. Volvo wanted to introduce a new car into the series, instead of the older model. So they provided a newer model, brown Volvo. Immediately we knew it had to be repainted, and chose a dark, non-shiny, black colour. It added more to the first Edward scene in the movie, the feeling is upbeat but the colour of the vehicle adds to the danger lurking.

3.) How did you decide to shoot the scene where the months are passing by, considering the books only name the months that pass?

A.) We originally thought we could use a blank screen with names of the months passing but felt that it was best to portray depression visually. CGI was used and the windows were covered by green screen. We used a robotic camera for revolvement to mimic the original hand camera as much as possible. I’m not sure if you noticed but with each revolvement the room changes, there are less pictures of her friends and the room gets more sparse.

4.) I really enjoyed the added scene with Victoria swimming towards Bella. (The book hints to the orange colour the water was reflecting, in a later revelation by Bella.) How did this scene come to be?

A.) Well, the orange coloured water wouldn’t have looked right in the scene so we put her in the water visibly. That scene was difficult because we wanted to film her swimming towards Bella but it had to be at a distance. If it wasn’t at a distance fans would wonder why Victoria didn’t just get her in that short scene, but at the same time it had to feel threatening. That was all shot in Vancouver in a swimming pool, we had the actors underwater with four or five frog men with air tubes for security purposes. We also had green screens in the water surrounding the actors so we could CGI in all the particals in the water. Theres actually a program to add in all of the floating debris and colour differences in the water after filming. Kristen had a cold at the time and was scared of drowning. We had to force her to stay in the water [laughter] But Rob was more comfortable in the water, hes had to shoot underwater scenes in the past. [Harry Potter]

5.) Were there any scenes that you would have loved to see in the film but never made the final cut?

A.) Yes, one scene. Theres a scene with a motorcycle crash that gives more of a sense of danger. The reason why it didn’t make the final cut was because of weather reasons, it was just too sunny to be considered Forks. The DVD will include that scene as well as extended scenes. Some of the extended scenes include more of Edward’s visit to the Volturi concerning his immortality and more from the scene between Carlisle and Bella. [when he was stitching Bella up.] In one of the early drafts of the script this scene was not in the movie. Immediately I knew that had to change, it was essential to the story line.

6.) In the movie why were there two scenes where Bella and Jacob almost kiss when its not as dramatized in the book?

A.) It was more of trying to get the point across and we kind of stole the thunder from Eclipe a tiny bit so it wasn’t just “Poor Jacob.” With less Edward we needed a little more romanticism without compromising the spirit of the book.

7.) Did you have any say in the soundtrack? If so, how difficult was it to choose what made the final cut?

A.) I actually had a lot of say in it, and a lot of great bands didn’t make the cut, [example: silver sun pickups] but we knew it needed to be more downbeat. For the scene with Bella’s initial depression [the months] we had an older radiohead song, but we brought in Lykke Li and she watched the scene. She came back to us with a track that worked perfectly, but was never-racking because you never know what they’re going to bring back. We really wanted newer, Indie songs for the soundtrack to match the mood.
